Here is the question of the day: What is the role of a Project Manager in an Agile project?
There are two major cases here:
First one is when a project manager also acts as a Scrum Master in the same project.
In most cases, there are lots of stakeholders in this project, not only Product Owner. So, for all of them and the world outside this person acts as a Project Manager. On the other hand, for the project team, he or she is a Scrum Master.
Such projects usually require several phases like Initiation, Planning, Execution, and Hand-off. So for example, in the Planning phase, the project team uses Scrum artifacts, but they are planning several sprints ahead. They can use techniques and tools from plan-driven approaches here. But when the team gets to the execution phase they follow the Scrum framework.
The second major case is when a project manager leads a group of Scrum Teams that work on the same project. In this case, Scrum Teams will have separate Scrum Masters.
The Project Manager focuses on general project progress. His objective is to ensure collaboration between teams, defining dependencies between them, managing risks, deadlines, budget and so on. Moreover, he or she works with stakeholders to identify high-level requirements and drafting User Stories.
In both cases, it is PM’s duty to select appropriate tools, techniques, and specify his responsibilities for the project.
OK, that’s all for today, if you want me to answer your question, please put it in the comments below. And do not forget to like this video. See you soon!
