The question of the day is: What makes a good project manager?
First, a good project manager always tries to improve his or her skills, knowledge and techniques. The body of knowledge is so vast that I hardly believe you can grasp in a decade or two.
Moreover, project management requires human interactions, and there are no limits in improving that.
The same goes for the project work itself. There so many ways to tweak and improve the efficiency of your project team, your communications with stakeholder, or quality of your deliverables. A good project manager never sits idle even if everything works like a charm.
Second, I believe that the best project managers are not afraid of conflicts. If you want to do something better, you will always encounter resistance towards your changes. It will put you in a conflict with someone. You just can’t please them all.
It goes throughout all levels. You should not be afraid to challenge the work of your team members. You should not be scared to share your opinion, question decisions or request of your superiors where it is appropriate.
Third, a good project manager knows how to balance management and leadership. Just to be clear, I don’t think that leadership can substitute project management. No matter what a perfect leader you are, you need to get things done in a controlled way.
So, these are the three traits of a perfect project manager: the desire to self-improve, readiness for conflicts, and balance between management and leadership.
